In this a series of brief blog posts I discuss Christian basics as articulated in The Church of the Nazarene Articles of Faith. As one prepares for ordination as an Elder Clergy in the the Church of the Nazarene, these articles serve as the heartbeat and foundation of who we are as a people and the foundation on which our clergy stand.
We Begin with The Triune God.
God is Triune and always has been; God is eternal, infinte, and almighty. God is Creator and Sustainer of the universe and all the marvelous intricacies and systems it entails. God's nature, attributes, and purpose is holy love and light. An essential characteristic of God is love; ever present, all-encompassing, compassionate love.
In essential being, God is Triune, revealed as three-in-one: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God is essentially (internally and externally) relational.
God is lover of my soul, desires our repentant heart, and wants to justify, regenerate, and adopt us into the family of God. He provided the Way by the Truth and the Light in His only Son, Jesus Christ. God loves us, desires our greatest well-being, and by prevenient grace and ever-present Holy Spirit, calls us to restored and right relationship with Godself.
God is time-full, Creator of time, Worker in time, and Almighty beyond creation's understanding of time. God gave humanity time, and desires restored relationship with Creation within a certain timeframe. There was a beginning, and there will be an end - a time when Christ returns and establishes a new heaven and new earth. Time will give way to eternity with God for those who have called on the name of Jesus.
We accept that the doctrine of the Trinity is a mystery, but Scripture and Christian experience, tradition, and reason make the doctrine necessary. It is central to Christian faith and belief in The Church of the Nazarene.
